Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by 43 runs in the Singer Cup final at The Padang, Singapore, on April 7, 1996. The memorable match featured Sanath Jayasuriya’s explosive batting and a strong comeback from Pakistan’s bowlers. 

Batting first, Pakistan were bowled out for 215 in 48.3 overs. Ijaz Ramiz Raja contributed 37. Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan took two wickets each for Sri Lanka. 

Sri Lanka began the chase aggressively through Jayasuriya, who reached his fifty in only 17 balls—the fastest ODI half-century 76 from just 28 deliveries, including eight fours and five sixes. However, his dismissal changed the momentum completely.           

Saqlain Mushtaq and Ata-ur-Rehman then dismantled Sri Lanka’s batting order. Saqlain took 3 for 46, while Ata claimed 3 for 27. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 172 in 32.5 overs, 

Saqlain Mushtaq was named Player of the Match, while Jayasuriya received the Player of the Series award after scoring 217 runs and taking three wickets during the tournament.
